What's Happening...
August 7, 2010
Busy, busy, busy....I've had a busy couple of weeks! The GOOD: Lots of auditions. The BAD: dealing with AFTRA and SAG. The GREAT: Getting a part I didn't audition for!
There's been quite a bit of activity lately, which is refreshing and encouraging. My participation in the theatre company has been minimal lately (my own fault), so it's nice to feel like my career isn't spending my days at an investment firm, but is one of an actress who auditions, rehearses sides, and even shoots.
The best thing about auditioning is walking away feeling happy with my performance. I've had a long, long, too long of a streak where that wasn't happening. My nerves have a tendency to get the best of me, and I've notoriously been a bad auditioner. I think the improv classes I was taking with Javier Ronceros have helped build my confidence tremendously. Of the past 7 or 8 auditions, I felt really good about 90% of them. That, of course, does not mean I landed any of the roles for which I auditioned. But for me, that's ok. As long as I can walk away proud of what I've done, I'm happy. I even got feedback from one of the casting directors complimenting me on my improv skills! (Thank you, Javier!)
Earlier this week, I got a call from a casting director for a webisode series that I auditioned for. No, she wasn't calling about the webisode (I thought I nailed it....pfft); instead, she was calling because she was also casting a feature film called The New Republic. Principal photography was already finished, but they were doing some pick-up shots and she thought I would be perfect for the role of a news anchor. Sweet! We shot my scene on Friday, which I thought went pretty well. I also got to see the trailer, which looked really great. Turns out my scene is opening the film....love it!
Oh, I did not get the part for the pilot I talked about in my last post, unfortunately, but they did like me and asked me to be in the pilot as one of the secondary characters. To be honest, I love the script so much that I am just happy I can be involved in any capacity.
I don't want to start rambling about my union issues because I may end up ranting until the wee hours of the morning, but let's just say that for the amount of money one must pay to join the union, you would think that they would be way more helpful than they are (read: more helpful than doing absolutely nothing). I am finally eligible to join SAG, but because of one organization's lack of recordkeeping, I'm getting the shaft. I don't give up easily, so this storyline is not over...
I also want to give a shout-out to two of my great friends (who happened to be married to each other) who BOTH booked guest star roles on episodics this week...watch for JP Hubbell on NCIS, and Royana Black on Medium! Congratulations!!!

Happy Birthday to me! heeheehee I love birthdays...always have! Happy to be alive, happy to be pursuing my dream, happy to be surrounded by amazing friends and family, and just happy to be happy.
I had a really great couple of weeks. Aside from an awesome birthday gift to Vegas last weekend (had the best time...thank you Seth..), I got to shoot a scene for an upcoming film titled Changing Hands, directed by Scott L. Schwartz. It was a pretty intense scene and I hope it ends up looking as good as it felt. Scott was a pleasure to work with and I was honored to be asked to be in his film.
I've had a few auditions lately - most of them went pretty well, I think. I definitely feel like the improv classes have boosted my confidence when asked to do something cold or just differently. I have a callback next week for a pilot I auditioned for last Thursday. When I first read the sides, I knew the part was perfect for me. Swearing, sarcasm..what more could I ask for?!
Wish me luck!

New theatrical reel is up!
April 27, 2010
Wow….Chapter Two seemed like so long ago already! The run went really well, I think. I had a lot of fun doing it. During the second act of the play, I had a particularly long monologue that, when I felt truly connected, was very much cathartic and liberating. That’s the beauty of acting…it’s its own kind of therapy. During much of the run I was going through quite a bit of stress in my personal life, and the one place I could either let it go or embrace it completely, was on stage. Analyst schmanalyst…I’ll take the stage any day.
Since Chapter Two ended, I’ve been taking improv classes at the theatre, which is led by one of our members, Javier. Javier and I were in The Last Judgment together, so I’d already gotten the chance to know him, and see his talent. What I didn’t know was how well he could conduct a class. Sensational. I was terrified of improv. Seriously terrified! But by the end of the first week I fell in love with it. What a challenge! I never thought I was one who could think on my feet (that idiom sounds really strange right now..huh.) since I often have trouble conjuring up requisite small talk. But it turns out I’m not as bad as I suspected. It’s been a remarkable learning experience, and I’m hooked on Javier. That’s what he should call the class…Hooked on Javier!
Another thing that’s been happening at the Alliance is something called 5.4.5. Every Friday night, the Company puts on five short performances and the public pays $5 to see them. (now ya get it? 5 for $5? Ahhhh...). Anyone is encouraged to submit pieces…writers can submit their work to see how a scene might flow, or gauge a reaction from the audience, and the company members will perform it. Or members bring in something of their own – a monologue, a stand-up bit they’ve been dying to try, a song, a scene, whatever. It’s a free-for-all, really, and the only requirement is that the piece be under 10 minutes. Well, I don’t know if I’m into self-torture or what, but last week I decided I was going to sing a song a capella in a language that I don’t speak. Yeah. It's a song that’s stuck with me for years. It’s from a scene in the movie Mulholland Drive, when Naomi Watts and Laura Harring are sitting in a theatre, and Rebekah del Rio comes on stage and sings “Llorando”, which is a Spanish version of Roy Orbison’s “Crying”. It’s insanely beautiful and gives me chills every time I hear it.
So on a last-minute whim, I signed up on Thursday and performed it on Friday. Mind you, my commute to my day job is only about 4 minutes, so that didn’t really leave me a whole lot of time to learn the words. The Spanish words. But…I did it! I was really nervous. I was really really nervous. I know I messed up a few (many) of the words (hopefully I didn’t say something vulgar) and my voice quivered from the nervousness. But what’s important is that I allowed myself to be completely vulnerable and surrendered to it. It wasn’t my best singing performance in the world, but nobody could say it didn’t have some heart…
I believe that all these things are helping me…in my hopes to gain confidence, and my abilities to be more open with the world – not just the select few in my inner circle.
In other news, a couple of the guys that produced and wrote The Missing Link (which I hear is coming along nicely!) just finished principal production on another feature film, called Fate. These guys were kind enough to think of me when casting, so I got the role one of the leads’ older sister, Kristine, in a very clever time-travel type of movie. I only had a couple of scenes, but I was grateful to them for including me! We shot my scenes last weekend and I think they’ll turn out nicely. One was an emotional scene, which again, I find to be the most fulfilling…both for the film and for myself. Therapy, I say!
A couple of weeks ago, I finally got my hands on an “almost-final” cut of Chronicles of a Love Unfound. I haven’t watched the whole thing yet (busy busy!), but from what I can tell, it looks great! Here are a couple of screen captures of me from the film.

We had a FANTASTIC opening of Chapter Two on Sunday! Thank you to those of you that were able to make it, and for those who didn't, I expect to see you at one of the next three Sundays!! Everyone had a great time, and really seemed to enjoy the show. I was very happy with the way things went, and was happy that all our hard work and rehearsals paid off. It doesn't hurt to have a fabulous director, and passionate actors who all went to great lengths to make it all happen.
It is so much fun playing Jennie Malone (and, I must admit, a little exhausting too, at times...) It's interesting...the character does and says so many things I could never see myself doing or saying, yet I can identify completely with so many of her emotions. I guess finally finding that was my big "aha" moment...
Come and see what I'm jabbering about! And get your tickets in advance...they sell out quickly! www.alliancerepertory.org

It's been a difficult week... The world we know lost a beautiful woman, and a beautiful soul. I like to think that the reason such good people are taken from their loved ones so young is because they've gleaned all they could from this life. She is most certainly an angel now, and perhaps her new role is to pass her enormous strength and courage on to others in a way that only an angel can...
You have a light that could never fade. Shine on, Jenn. |

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! It seems like every time I update the news there's a holiday, so I'm either updating too infrequently, or there are an awful lot of holidays...!
We wrapped up "Eight" on Saturday, December 19th to a full house! We ran all eight one-acts and it seemed like everybody felt good about their piece. I thought our performance of The Last Judgment was our best...possibly because of the heightened emotion of it being our last performance...? My co-stars Javier and Bryan were fantastic, and they made it very easy for me to be in the moment. It was a pleasure working with them, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I participated in a staged reading of Neil Simon's Chapter Two a couple weeks ago, and really enjoyed it. I loved the character of Jennie, and it felt good to do some different material. Apparently it went well enough that we're planning on running it for four Sundays. I will be sure to disclose the details as I get them.
I've made some updates to my website (had to cancel plans to go back to the midwest for Christmas because of a crazy winter storm, so I finally had time to do so!), and created a whole new photo gallery, with pics from my modeling days, photos from various films I've worked on, and a slew of Survivor photos. Those are not...um...the most flattering photos of me, but it is what it is. It was rough out there! CBS is hosting a big red carpet event in a couple of weeks for all the casts of the past TEN years of Survivor (ten years??!! crazy!), so I'm looking forward to seeing my former tribemates again.
I also changed my video page, so my commercial reel is a little easier to access...I'm still working on getting the footage I need to complete my theatrical reel, but it is in the works!
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas or a Happy Hanukkah (or both, like me!) and my very best wishes for a Happy New Year!!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Lots happening lately, and it is that time of year when everything seems to be in fast-forward. “Eight” has been going very well! We’re at the halfway point right now, having performed 6 shows and having 6 more remaining. We’re off this weekend for the holiday, but back at it next weekend. I’ve been having a blast doing it. There is still time to see the show..check the website! www.alliancerepertory.org.
A couple of weeks ago, I saw some footage of The Missing Link, and was very, very happy with what I saw. It was just a rough edit of a few scenes, but extremely promising. I’m (...unusually) optimistic about the prospects of this one…it was shot beautifully, directed very well, and is being edited by someone who has plenty of experience. That last factor being so, so, so important. It probably won’t be finished until early next year, but oddly enough, I’m ok with waiting!
The DVDs for the thickness of delirium have been completed, and I believe they are currently being sent out to everyone who had a hand in the making of the film… If you are interested in buying a copy of the DVD, you can do so at http://www.thethicknessofdelirium.com/buy.html

Moving. Ugh. On one hand it's a major pain, even when you hire movers...the packing, the unpacking, the cleaning the old place, blah blah blah. It blows, really. But on the other hand, it's exciting, too. A new place, a new neighborhood, only MINUTES from your day job, and just...new beginnings. So, although I've been physically and mentally exhausted for the past couple of weeks, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as they say. Now it's time to settle in and make it "home". I wasn't thinking too clearly on my choice of dates for moving, though. We've been smack in the middle of rehearsals all month. Plus, in my recent brainlessness, I offered to be the "webmaster" for the theatre company. I have to say...as much as I just really don't have the time to do it, I do enjoy it when I do it. Please check it out and tell me what you think. It's pretty basic, but hopefully you find it well-organized and user-friendly. www.alliancerepertory.org is the website. And as long as you're there, and should you happen to be in Los Angeles in the next couple of months, you should buy tickets to see me perform! I am part of the cast of "EIGHT" (details on the Upcoming page of the Alliance website), and will be performing in the Bassett one-act called "The Last Judgment". I've really enjoyed working on this, and can't wait to perform it. Our opening night is November 7, so get your tickets now! You can do it right on the site, through PayPal. The Bassett pieces are running in rep with the Kraar pieces through mid-December, so just check the drop-down button for the dates, and come see me! I would love to see some familiar faces in the audience.
In other news, last weekend I attended the premiere of Unwelcome Strangers! It was so crazy to see the cast and crew again, most of which I haven't seen since we wrapped -- three years ago! Everybody looked great and I had a blast. Watching the film was very bizarre. When you see your face all huge on a screen....well, a person tends to cringe a little. Ok, if you're me, a lot. All-in-all, I was really just happy that the movie got finished at all. We had such an extraordinary experience together, it would have been a shame not to have the product from it. Two weeks in the middle of nowhere in Northern California with a bunch of, well, strangers!
In my opinion, the movie has its good points and its bad. I think much of the acting was pretty solid; I believe we'll all be able to use parts of it for our reels. There are some great moments with some of the locals that are hilariously priceless. The cinematographer, Pierre, was very very good. Where it fell apart, I think, was the editing. I would love for a very experienced editor to get all of the raw footage and start over from scratch. If we had that, I think we'd have a pretty good movie! But...I really don't want to complain because the experience was fantastic and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I heard from The Missing Link's producer this week, and what a wonderful call to receive. It truly made my day. He was very appreciative of the work I did in the film, and just called to express that to me. Warm fuzzies! I'm hoping to see some edited footage in the next week or so. Exciting! I'm actually going to have some good material for my reel!
Well, that's my update for now. Keep checking back and don't forget to come to my show! |

What a crazy couple of months it’s been! My efforts to be better with the updates have been admittedly….pathetic, but somewhat justified. I was on vacation for a couple of weeks, then was back in LA for a few days, during which time I had to say a final goodbye to my very best friend and companion for the past 7 years. His name was Floyd, and he was the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever known. He had more personality than half the population of Los Angeles. He became very sick very quickly, so I can at least take comfort in that he didn’t have to suffer needlessly. If anyone has had to put down a beloved pet, then you know how very difficult it is…and you hope that they know how much they’re loved as they slip away in your arms…I miss my baby so very much. |

His name was Floyd, and he was the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever known. He had more personality than half the population of Los Angeles. If anyone has had to put down a beloved pet, then you know how very difficult it is…and you hope that they know how much they’re loved as they slip away in your arms…I miss my baby so very much.
The next day, my father became ill, so I went back to Wisconsin for a week (he’s doing better now, thankfully...), then back to LA for a few days before getting put on jury duty (as an alternate) on a criminal trial that lasted a week. And I must say…it’s incredibly maddening to be an alternate juror and know the verdict(s) went the absolute wrong way. (God help me if I ever need to be judged by a ‘jury of my peers’!)
Anyway, I’m finally getting some breathing room!
So…the staged reading and fundraiser for Alliance went very well and was a great kickstart for the company. After that event, auditions were held for a full production, and I landed a lead role! We were supposed to start a six-week run at the end of October, but the play got pushed back to January, which actually works out well, because the role is a challenging one, and I could use the time to work on my character. In the meantime, ARC will be putting on 8 one-act plays starting at the end of October. I auditioned for those as well, and got a part in one of those too! Rehearsals have already started and seem to be going well. There are only three of us in the scene, but there’s a lot going on. I’m very excited about both productions!
I also met with the Producer of The Missing Link, the feature I did this spring. He told me things were progressing well with the film, although editing was taking longer than expected (which usually seems to be the case). He also presented me with some opportunities to work with him on some other films in the future, so that is very exciting. He has some really great ideas.
I also got word that the cast and crew of Unwelcome Strangers will finally get to see the final cut of the film next weekend (crossing fingers that it actually happens!)
So, lots of things keeping me busy these days…Details to come on the Alliance productions!

Yikes, it's been too long! I'll try to be better with updates...
I've been taking more workshops - Amy Reece and Brooke Davis, Marnie Saitta (loved her) and currently taking one with Jennifer Lurey. I'm finding them to be very helpful and insightful; it's so interesting to hear the different perspective from various casting directors. What some like, other hate, and vice versa. In the end, it really comes down to you, the actor, and what feels right for you. |
 |
I recently joined the Alliance Repertory Company ( www.alliancerepertory.org), which is very exciting! It's been a loooong time since I've performed live (even counting singing in the band when I was back in Wisconsin...seems like forever ago...!). We're doing a staged reading this Sunday called Shrunken Heads as a 'welcome back' and fundraising event (Alliance has been around for many, many years but just getting back to performances after a bit of a hiatus). I will be playing the part of Jennifer Todhunter Hyde. Check out the details on the website, and feel free to donate to the company even if you can't make the show...! |
A lot of the work I've been doing over the last couple of years should start to surface in the near future (I hope!). From what I've heard from writer/producer Michael King, post-production on The Missing Link has been going well, and we should be seeing a trailer soon. I came across this photo from the website
of Markus Innocenti, who directed the film...Muff and Grog in action!

Unwelcome Strangers, the first film I did when I moved to L.A., is reportedly finished! We're supposed to have a cast and crew screening soon (although I think I am finally understanding that in Hollywood lingo, "soon" usually means "a few months"!). Here are a couple of photos from that shoot... |

Still lots more to come, but I am well on my way. Keep checking back for more updates, photos, video and maybe even some of those old Survivor photos!
I finished shooting "The Missing Link" a little over a week ago, and had a great experience. The director and crew were very easy to work with, and I miss everyone already! For most of the film we were dirty and 'unkempt' (I'm feeling like that's my element!) Here are a couple photos from the set:
